Luiz H. Barbosa, DVM, MPH, joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in 1976 as Health Scientist Administrator, Blood Resources Branch, in the Intsitute's Division of Blood Diseases and Resources. In 1989 he was named Deputy Chief of the Division's Transfusion Medicine Branch. Dr. Barbosa's primary area of research interest is virology/infectious diseases. His specific areas of expertise are in transfusion medicine and tissue transplantaion, including the supply, safety, and appropriate therapeutic uses of blood products and blood substitutes.
Dr. Barbosa received his DVM in 1958 from the National School of Veterinary Medicine, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a postgraduate in 1962, Dr. Barbosa joined the World Health Organization Project, Pan American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease, Rio de Janeiro. He went on to pursue postgraduate studies in the United States concentrating on such areas as virology, immunology, neuropathology, microbiology, and cellular physiology. He earned an MS in Public Health from American University, Washington, D.C. in 1981.
Dr. Barbosa is a member of the International AIDS Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
