Dr. Richard CannonRichard Cannon, M.D., joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in 1979. He is Clinical Director of the Institute's Division of Intramural Research, and Head of the Clinical Cardiology Section in the Cardiology Branch. Dr. Cannon's research involves treatment of severe coronary artery disease with autologous stem and progenitor cells. His research interests include the role of nitric oxide on the regulation of blood vessel functions and blood flow in the heart. Specifically, he studies nitric oxide transport in blood and its effect on blood vessels.

Dr. Cannon received his Bachelors Degree from Vanderbilt University and his M.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in his native city of Nashville, TN. He performed his residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, MO and completed cardiology fellowship training at the Clinical Center, NIH.

Dr. Cannon is the author or coauthor of 147 original research publications and 90 review articles or book chapters.
